Post-Gothic Dreams: The Art of Khairul Azmir Shoib (Meme) 2001 – 2009
Kuala Lumpur – R A Fine Arts - The Gallery announced that it would host a solo art exhibition entitled “Post – Gothic Dreams: The Art of Khairul Azmir Shoib (Meme) 2001 – 2009”. The exhibition will run from 7th to 26th March 2009 and is curated by Safrizal Shahir, a lecturer from the School of Art, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
Post-Gothic Dreams feature contemporary artworks created by the versatile artist, Khairul Azmir Shoib, or as he is better known, Meme. In the context of Malaysian visual art, Meme is categorized as belonging to a new generation of artists who create artworks that are challenging and contemporary. The artworks featured in this exhibition cover a wide range of styles, including sketches, paintings, sculptures and installations. These art forms were influenced by post-Gothic elements, infusing fantasy, horror and mystery. Meme’s exploration of the dream-like post-Gothic world is unique and different. This uniqueness is manifest in the imagery and the subjects his art focuses on, mostly concerning the themes of isolation, mystery and suspicion. This is a result of an effort to react to the question of self, social spaces and memory. And because of this, Meme has carved a niche for himself, clearly establishing his works as something new in the context of modern and contemporary Malaysian art.
“Post – Gothic Dreams: The Art of Khairul Azmir Shoib (Meme) 2001 – 2009” will be launched on 7 March 2009 (Saturday) at 3.00pm by Prof. Madya Fauzan Omar, a lecturer from the School of Art, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
